Third Degree Nostalgia

Awe. Moving. It conjures thoughts of new beginnings. Excitement over things to come. Dreams of our new space, all shiny and new. And lets face it, how close each of our desks will be to a window.

We are ready for the next leg of our journey but for us, as we pack, we are feeling a bit nostalgic.

Current logo on a coaster.

Don't you just love old photos?

A coaster. And a reminder.

Oh, the creative that could be found on these old hard drives. And the incriminating emails.

Do they even make HOT DAMN anymore?

Media Buyer by Day. Office Designer by Default.

Everyone knows those people who work hard to develop a knowledge base and craft in college only to move on to start a career in an industry unrelated to their degree. That’s me. With a Bachelor of Interior Design from the University of Oklahoma, (and countless all-nighters in the College of Architecture studios) I’m now working on 8 years at Third Degree. As a Media Buyer, my Excel spreadsheets are not only strategic and thoughtful, but let’s be honest…color coordinated.

Did I mention it also qualifies me to judge coloring contests?

Coloring Contest

I interviewed for a temporary position as the Receptionist to pay the bills after college. Having spent a couple weeks in a hot warehouse, checking the caps on tubes of “Femoré” (I’ll leave that product description in the hands of Google), I was ready for a job in a climate controlled office. Little did I know most of the summer, shorts were considered “office chic” in the old Mercantile building.

Shorts and Legs

After falling in love with these guys…

and these characters…

Halloween

And learning that Media at Third Degree was not just about numbers and spreadsheets (no matter how colorful) and was more about finding targeted, creative and impactful ways to get our clients’ messages out…I stuck around…for awhile.

Get Square

I was later asked to co-design our Diner/Breakroom/Conference Room with coworker Kathleen Shannon. We rented a cargo van, shared scandalous stories with each other (her more so than me) and crossed the Red River to IKEA.

Diner Picture

Now, with the help of Creatives, Adam and Brett, I’m calling that the Trial Run before the new task at hand.

Floorplan Picture

A whole new office space: demolition, construction, codes, timelines…may I suggest a little wine? And one excited Media Buyer.

Group Photo Shoot Outtakes

Because we're oversharers, we couldn't help showing off our outtakes from the impromptu group photoshoot this week. Here's the scene...

[INT: Third Degree Office. Early morning. No one's had coffee yet.]
Daniel: Hey, let's do the group shot before it gets too hot.
Liz: Yeah, this is your last chance before I fly back to Durham.
Brett: But who are we going to sucker into being our photographer?
All: Jared!

[EXT: Backdoor of Third Degree offices.]
Jared: Okay, just like the Bricktown engagement photoshoots.
Liz: You go here. You go here. You go here.
Adam: I'm having second thoughts, guys.

Daniel: Let's move out to the sidewalk a little.
Brett: Yes! Like an album cover. Everyone space out and look serious.
Jared: Okay, everyone. One, twooooo, three!

Liz: Did I blink?
Jared: No, but let's take another one to be safe.
Daniel: Places, everyone!
Jared: Okay, everyone. One, twooooo, three!

Jared: Got it!

Paint By Numbers

I'm in Atlanta visiting our friends at Delta Community Credit Union. Great restaurants, good company... plus, I got to see one of their new number-themed commercials we just finished up for them on my TV at the hotel this morning!

TenTV

I never get to see their commercials "for real" because, well, duh, I live in Oklahoma City, and it never seems quite real until you see one of your spots during Project Runway or Top Chef, or in this case, the news. Which I only ever seem to watch when I'm in hotels or airports.

HotelPajama

Me. In my PJs. Watching the news (just because there aren't any reality shows on TV at 6:00 in the morning).

Director: David Stepp / Animator: Steve Jones / Audio: Lucky Dog / Photography: Simon Hurst

These TV spots were all about Ten Reasons to Switch in 2010 to Delta Community. These spots turned out so cool. We wanted to bring these numbers to life to create a memorable and optimistic new membership campaign for Delta Community for the new year (a fuzzy number five dog, a number three sonogram)...

Plus, it was as about as close as I could get to living out my lifelong dream to work for Sesame Street or Jim Henson. I mean, our big orange fuzzy number five was definitely muppet-worthy.

SuitcaseFont

This is Doug. He's the bad ass who constructed all these props for us back at his shop at Eaton Quade. He doesn't even flinch when we say, "can you make a giant number eight shrubbery for us?" Which is good, because then his cigar might fall out of the corner of his mouth. We think he should have a reality show about his shop, like American Chopper.

NumberShop

American Chopper with giant Fruit Loop colored numbers everywhere, that is!

PropShop

Actually color was a big deal when planning for this shoot. Kathleen was the master mind of all things fuzzy, paint sample chippy, paper leafy, etc...

WarholTest

Tons of planning went in to creating the props and the perfect color palette, from deciding to paint the studio "Decisive Yellow" as was named on the swatch, to buying lots of coordinating wardrobe for all the talent. And, of course, Kathleen also stood in as the model for the test shots.

NoHoopsAd

I know Delta Community is excited to kick off the new campaign.

CharlieFive

And I was excited to take home the fuzzy five (just for one night) to show my number one five-year old.

Third Degree: The Photo Shoot

Today we launch the new Third Degree website. Yay! Which means Third Degree can share our most recent work, case studies, thoughts, hopes, dreams, etc...

DanielBrianEyesClosed

It also means since we took some new staff photos for the site at David McNeese studio, I can now finally show you all the embarrassing behind the scenes photos. Like this one. Classic.

BrianAmISmiling

Has anyone seen a creative (and a copywriter to boot) ever smile so big?

ScowlingCreatives

That's more like it.

CrazyCreativeDirector

I tend to get carried away.

HollyCampaignForBeauty

This was my favorite shot of the day. Holly our media director looks just like a shampoo commercial. So ethereal, angelic. I call it Holly-Campaign-For-Beauty-Dot-Com.

HollyWTF

I call this one, Holly WTF?

MickieVisitor

Our executive vice president Mickie, had to bring her little boy to the shoot. It was only a matter of time before that situation spiraled.

AmandasTwin

Speaking of spiraling situations, Roy, our CEO made an impromptu appearance at the studio. So, while Amanda doesn't have a child in her shot... well, you finish that sentence.

SoYouThinkYouCanDance

Of course, having Roy show up equaled instant hilarity. Or maybe that was just because of the wine he brought with him.

GroupShot

All in all, a memorable day.

BehindTheLens

As for selective memory, this is when I promised everyone I wouldn't share their embarrassing photos.

Ready For Your Closeup, Regional Health Care Center?

So our creative team recently tackled two photo shoots in the same week for two different clients. Nothing too unusual about that.

UnityWelcomeMat

But what was kind of funny is that they were both for regional rural health centers, Jackson County Memorial Hospital and Unity Health Center.

CanYouReadMeSimon

And, both shoots were booked with Simon Hurst, one of our favorite photographers from across the pond (that means he's English, like the Hugh Grant.... or Mr. Bean).

TheOtherSimon

He calls Oklahoma home, now, though. It's not like we fly him in special-like all the way from England.

BeauInRepose

That's his photographer's assistant, Beau.

BeauInAction

Beau is like a magician's sequined, smiling assistant. Except not smiling, and no sequins. But he does get all the glamorous jobs like keeping Simon and his camera dry in the rain.

This might be some lighting thing going on here, but I'm pretty sure it's makeshift umbrella duty.

BeauContemplates

Beau probably has a lot more to say than he shares. As he watches our associate creative director Brian, consult with Simon, Beau's probably thinking we should try a different composition, or consider shooting our every day people with greater depth of field to exaggerate the concept of them playing a powerful role in their own healthcare.

Or he's wondering when we might break for lunch.

JCMH-0002 Brand Platforms.indd

A lot of times we use stock photography for our executions, especially in the initial concepting phase. This is one of the brand platforms we just started for one of our newest clients, Jackson County Memorial Hospital. We'll continue to develop this brand into other messaging mediums like a web site redesign, annual report and an internal awareness initiative including an employee brand book. But we'll be replacing some of the stock photography with custom photography of real doctors, patients and members of the community.

UnityCreative

It's not unlike the brand we created for Unity a couple years back. The "it starts at the center," platform has been a springboard for outdoor, web, print and also internal outreach – like a brand video they shared with all the staff and community members at a town hall-style launch of the new Unity look and feel. We ended up using a combination of stock and "real people" photography in the final pieces we created for them.

SmallTalkinSimon

It's always an unpredictable undertaking shooting real staff and patients. Simon is really great about putting them all at ease, and they usually find his British accent incredibly charming. Because, unless you're like our art director Kathleen, most regular people don't necessarily run to fling themselves in front of the camera.

RollinWithLizAndFelina

Although it's always pretty easy to find Third Degree team members who are willing to act as stand-ins while we find our best shot.

Okay, technically since our account coordinator Felina is expecting, it's somewhat appropriate for her to be pushed in a wheelchair. But our designer, Liz, is definitely not qualified to be her caregiver. Although I have a suspicion she's no stranger to playing doctor.

Hastings & The Ham

We've kind of really gotten into this style of video where you shoot lots of still photography in particular sequence (like dancing), that when animated together creates a really cool moving picture. This is an approach we first tried with our Think It Up Addy video, and then liked it so much we used it for TFCU's Buck The Norm video.

HastingsBlock
Freeze Frames photography by Simon Hurst

Most recently we've applied this approach to the new TV spot for Hastings, a nationwide entertainment retailer. They really wanted to have a TV spot shot inside their actual store to show off the newly redesigned look of their stores as well as all their stuff: books, movies, games and music. We didn't want to shoot a ho-hum video commercial, so we decided this photo-animated approach would have an edgier look and appeal.

Hastings :30 Sec "More" TV

Then we added lots of graphics and typography and effects, storyboarded out a sequence, and through music and animation brought it all to life.

HastingsStyle
Art Director-Slash-Stylist

Kathleen produced and art directed the Hastings TV spot. And, as always, she also brought along a lot of her clothes to help supplement the wardrobe, which we ended up using for both of our actresses pictured here.

HeadphoneSisters
Headphones Make The Look

Hmmm, does that super-fly head gear look familiar? Hey, if you're trying to achieve a particular look and feel with props and wardrobe, sometimes it's just quicker to bring your own stuff than to go shopping.

KathleenMontage
Honey Ham

So you know how I said that it's hard to keep Kathleen away from the camera? I actually think this Hastings shoot, surprisingly enough, was one of the first times she forgot to jump in front of the lens. But as you can see by this collection of thumbnails she's had plenty of practice getting Simon and David (our two favorite photographers) to let her ham it up on the set.

CoachScott
Making The Pass

This is the shot that started it all. That's Byron Scott, coach of the NBA Hornets, when his team temporarily called OKC home during post-Katrina, before returning to New Orleans. Third Degree did a Cox Digital Cable commercial in the locker room with Coach Scott, and as Kathleen handed him his prop (a TV remote control), she couldn't help but strike a pose. Simon, of course, played accomplice and was ready to snap her sneaky play.
